I am told it can be set in EXTRA_OPTS in the dappnode config without changing the package.

Yes! well understood from your side.

You can set whatever furhter configuration you would like, add it at your own risk.

You should just be able to add the

–data-dir=/media/yourbeedir

I think yourbeedir has to exist

And that has to be added in EXTRA_OPTS in config -> show advanced editor
